The Safe Passage Project
https://www.safepassageproject.org/donate/
Safe Passage Project is a highly-focused nonprofit immigration legal services organization. They provide free lawyers to refugee and immigrant children in the NYC-area & Long Island who face deportation back to life-threatening situations, despite their strong legal claim to stay in the US.
They also have a program to train lawyers for Pro Bono work in immigration cases.
UnLocal
https://www.unlocal.org/become-an-unlocal-ally/
UnLocal’s team of lawyers and advocates provide free legal advice and representation to immigrant communities throughout New York State on their immigration-related matters. Their team provides legal representation to individuals interacting with the immigration system at all stages of the process.
NYLag
NyLag’s Pro Se Plus Project (PSPP) is a collaboration of several immigration legal services providers and community based organizations aiming to address some of the legal needs of newly arrived immigrants to New York City.
PSPP provides thorough legal orientations, robust screenings, triage, and community access to pro se assistance with applications for asylum, employment authorization, immigration court motions, and other immigration-related relief for unrepresented immigrants. To provide these services, PSPP staff trains and leverages volunteers and interns.
The Catholic Charities
The Catholic Charities Pro Bono Project volunteer platform is designed to broaden and deepen statewide legal capacity for low-income immigrants who face a dearth of access to legal services.
The Pro Bono Project is designed to give lawyers who do not specialize in immigration law the tools they need to competently and effectively assist the most vulnerable immigrants. A lawyer can choose from a number of individual cases. Once they select a case, their representation of their client will be supported by expert legal training and in-depth mentorship.
The Legal Aid Society
Immigration & Deportation
They provide urgent legal services to reunify families and assist low-income immigrants in obtaining lawful status, applying for citizenship, and defending against deportation.
Their Immigrant Youth Project represents unaccompanied children and youth in New York to obtain Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), asylum, T and U visas, and other immigration benefits.
And know your rights
Key rights to know
Right to remain silent:
You are not required to answer questions about your immigration or citizenship status with police or immigration agents, and anything you say can be used against you.
Right to refuse to sign:
Do not sign any papers without speaking to an attorney first.
Right to an attorney:
You have the right to consult with a lawyer before answering questions or signing documents.
Right to refuse searches:
You can say no if an agent asks for permission to search you or your property. They cannot search without your consent or a warrant based on probable cause.
Right to refuse entry:
Do not open your door to an immigration agent without a valid, judge-signed warrant. A warrant signed by an immigration officer is not the same and does not permit entry into your home.
Right to papers:
If you are an immigrant and an agent asks to see your immigration papers, you must show them if you have them with you. However, it's often recommended to carry copies of important documents and have a lawyer's information readily available
